Check out our new display track!
Built in 1914 by the shops in Roanoke, Virginia, Norfolk & Western caboose #518021 joins our roster as the oldest piece of rolling stock in our collection. This caboose was donated by N&W to the United Way in the 1970s, and subsequently sold to a railroad museum in Ohio. It changed hands to another museum before being sold as surplus. It eventually ended up in a farm in Hillsdale before being donated to our organization by Mr. Grover Johnson. We are excited to place this piece on permanent display and we are looking forward to using it for many events going forward!
Joining the caboose on display is our first locomotive, Plymouth #1. This locomotive kicked off train operations at the Southern Michigan Railroad and was a critical piece in turning our railroad into what it is today. We are excited to give it yet another life in the spotlight, and we are looking forward to turning it into an educational museum piece as time and funding allows.
We’d like to extend our thanks to Schaedler Enterprises, Inc for assisting us with the movement and placement of these pieces on our new display track. And, of course, thank you to Mr. Grover for his generous donation of this caboose!
